Maradi, Niger, July 15, 2008—Lightning spiders the night sky over southern Niger's Maradi. Last week the French telecommunications giant France Telecom announced that it would launch Internet and mobile phone service in Maradi and four other cities in Niger.

Despite being one of the poorest countries in the world, Niger is part of the rapidly expanding telecom market in Africa.
