Honolulu, Hawaii, May 26, 2008—Japanese lanterns, dedicated to victims of war, float during the Lantern Floating Hawaii ceremony on U.S. Memorial Day at Ala Moana Beach.

A Japanese ceremony conducted by the Shinnyo-en Buddhist order, the tradition was introduced in Hawaii in 1999.

About 34,000 people witnessed the ceremony—the only one of its kind outside Japan—the Honolulu Advertiser reported.
