Kathmandu, Nepal, May 29, 2008—Riot police take cover from stones thrown by demonstrators around the royal palace during clashes in Kathmandu. The previous day Nepal's new constitutional assembly had abolished the monarchy and declared the Himalayan country a republic.

The clashes erupted when citizens celebrating the new republic approached the palace and demanded the monarch step down immediately. Nepal's "god-king" Gyanendra is to leave his official home within two weeks, according to the new order.
