Vatican City, May 6, 2008—Wearing the uniforms that—in Pope Benedict XVI's words to them on May 5—"speak … of your commitment to serve God," some of the 33 new Swiss Guards march to their swearing-in ceremony.

The 110-person corps protects the pope and the Vatican. Owing to historic papal-Swiss alliances, the guards are all Swiss Catholic males. They must also be unmarried, under 30, and at least 5 feet, 8 inches (174 centimeters) tall.
