Buddhist monks in Yangon (Rangoon) clear debris left by a cyclone that demolished much of the city over the weekend in a May 4, 2008, photo.

City residents and monks banded together, wielding axes and knives, to free roads of fallen trees.

Some monasteries also opened their doors to Yangon residents left homeless by the storm, the Associated Press reported.
