Memphis, Tennessee, April 4, 2008—A participant holds a bust of Martin Luther King, Jr., during a Friday rally on the 40th anniversary of his assassination.

King was shot by James Earl Ray while standing outside his room at Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

The motel was converted into the National Civil Rights Museum in 1991.
