En route to Sydney on June 27, 2000, a diver caries the first underwater Olympic torch—a longtime dream of Olympic organizers—over the Great Barrier Reef.

The 2000 torch was outfitted with a special solid fuel pellet similar to those used in distress flares. Swimmers had carried the 1968 Mexico City flame too—above the water.
