A man pulls a body from burning debris after a jet crashed into a crowded neighborhood in Goma, Congo, on April 15, 2008.

Reports of fatalities from the disaster have ranged from about 20 to more than 70.

"I know that at Goma Hospital there were 45 dead bodies and 5 survivors," said correspondent Michael Davie, who was in Goma on assignment for National Geographic Television & Film.

The hundreds of people who rushed to the crash site included altruists and opportunists alike, Davie noted.

"In and among the wreckage were several hundred people trying to douse the flames, people going through the wreckage looking for survivors," he said, "and also people looting the wreckage, people trying to find anything valuable that they might keep for themselves or sell later."
