Mathura, India, March 17, 2008—Crowds of people toss colored powder into the air as part of a celebration for Holi, the Hindu spring festival of colors.

The multiday festival officially starts on the day after the first full moon of spring—this year on March 22.

The bright colors, bonfires, and other rituals commemorate both the legend of the demon prince Prahlad as a triumph of good over evil and the passionate love between Lord Krishna and his consort Radha.
