Atlanta, Georgia, March 14, 2008—A billboard lies across a row of cars after being toppled by a tornado in downtown Atlanta.

Tornadoes in urban areas are rare, but when they occur they can be devastating.

The Atlanta twister killed at least two people and injured more than two dozen while damaging several of the city's landmarks, including hotels and the convention center.
