Second Prize, Nature (Stories)
World Press Photo Contest 2007

The severed head of a narwhal stains sea ice in the Nunavut territory of Canada. The whale had sunk after being shot, then later resurfaced, offering Inuit hunters an unexpected bounty. (See more narwhal photos taken for National Geographic magazine by photographer Paul Nicklen.)

The magazine took first, second, and third place in the 2007 World Press Photo Contest's nature photo-essays category. First place went to David Littschwager's pictures of miniature animals from Hawaiian waters. Nicklen won third place for his images of animals affected by a warming Arctic.

Christopher Anderson's photographs of Bethlehem for National Geographic garnered third prize in the daily-life photo-essays category.
