Antarctica, February 26, 2008—An aurora is observed from the icebreaker Shirase.

The 11,600-ton ship bid farewell to Antarctica on February 15 after 25 years in service, according to the Associated Press.

Shirase—Japan's third icebreaker for Antarctic expeditions—was one of the world's powerful icebreakers—and could move through ice 5 feet (1.5 meters) thick.
