Melbourne, Australia, January 3, 2008—A protestor covered in fake blood lies at the center of a Japanese flag during an anti-whaling protest outside the Asian country's consulate.

About 250 Animal Liberation Victoria (ALV) protestors demonstrated against Japan's plans to kill about a thousand whales off the coast of Antarctica.

"The blood symbolized the whales which are being illegally slaughtered by Japan", ALV spokesperson Noah Hannibal told the news agency AFP.

In December, bowing to international pressure, Japan had dropped its plan to kill 50 threatened humpback whales.
