1953: Heroes' Welcome in London

Tenzing Norgay—Nepalese climbing companion of Edmund Hillary (front in grey jacket)—waves the British flag during a visit to London after their Everest triumph.

Norgay received the George Medal of Britain, the Star of Nepal from his home country, and honors from other countries.

In 1954 he became director of field training for the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, India. In 1978 he founded Tenzing Norgay Adventures, a company providing trekking adventures in the Himalaya.

Norgay died of a bronchial condition in 1986 at the age of 71.
