Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, drink a celebratory cup of tea back at a cliffside camp after scaling Mount Everest.

The expedition unleashed a blizzard of worldwide attention that included a knighthood for Hillary just four days later by newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II.
