Chennai, India, December 26, 2007—An artist spritzes water on a sand sculpture on Marina Beach in southern India, part of a commemoration of the third anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami.

More than 3,500 people died on Indian islands and nearly 9,000 lost their lives on the mainland, mostly in the state of Tamil Nadu, during the disaster.

Altogether, 230,000 people perished across 12 Indian Ocean nations.

The tsunami was sparked by the strongest earthquake in the region in 40 years.
