The Chinese capital, known for its stifling pollution, faced level-five air quality on Thursday—the worst level of air pollution, according to the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau.

Officials have promised to improve the city's air in time for next year's Olympic games, but athletes and organizers remain skeptical.
