Bangkok, Thailand, December 5, 2007—Thousands of revelers light candles on the royal grounds outside Thailand's Grand Palace as they commemorate Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 80th birthday on Wednesday.

Bhumibol is the world's longest reigning monarch, having ruled for 61 years. Although he has no formal political role, he is regarded by many politicians as the force that holds the country together. Bhumibol has stilled bloody uprisings, weathered military coups, and reigned through scores of governments—both democratic and dictatorial.
