The Western European country was recently ranked ninth in a UN report on the world's most advanced nations.

In addition to high education rates and a strong per capita income, the Dutch have taken a proactive approach to protecting themselves from climate change-induced sea-level rise—a real threat in their densely populated, low-lying country—the report said.

For example, engineers have designed innovative networks of dykes to control flooding, and some citizens are investing in homes that can float on water.
