The West African nation ranked next to last in an annual UN report on human development released this week.

The youth literacy rate is second worst in the world, at 33 percent, according to data collected between 1995 and 2000 featured in the Human Development Report 2007/2008.

Other markers of advancement are low as well: A person in Burkina Faso can expect to live only about 51 years, according to the report.
