Red Sea, Yemen, September 30, 2007—An infrared photo taken off the deck of a Canadian frigate shows lava flows and clouds of ash spewing from a volcano on the island of Jabal al-Tair. (Watch a video of the eruption.)

The volcano—which became active after being dormant for a hundred years—spewed lava and ash for three days, killing three soldiers. Five others were reported missing.
