On October 21, 2007, with the sun beating down and powerful Santa Ana winds blowing, Geronimo Ruiz sprays fire-retardant foam on Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg's Malibu, California, home.

Bringing abnormally hot air from inland deserts, the Santa Anas have combined with localized droughts and sizzling temperatures to stoke blazes across southern California.

The winds show no signs of slowing until at least October 24, the U.S. National Weather Service said on October 23.
