An artist's concept shows a racetrack for rocket-powered jets that will be developed in New Mexico in 2008.

A venture by Peter Diamandis, chair and CEO of the X Prize Foundation, the Rocket Racing League will feature craft similar to the podracers of Star Wars fame.

The first generation racers will hug the surface of the planet, and seven years later will speed through suborbital arcs into space, league officials say.

By 2025 the futuristic race will circumnavigate the Earth in lower orbit.
