In this artist rendering released by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in April 2005, a manned spacecraft flies to the moon from Earth.

On October 5 JAXA's lunar probe called SELENE achieved orbit around the moon, a first step in Japan's goal to build a moon base by 2030.
