NASA is developing new Ares launchers like this Ares V cargo launch vehicle, as seen in an artist's concept, to ferry astronaut teams to what researchers hope will be the first construction site on the moon.

The Ares will be NASA's primary vessel for delivering large-scale hardware to a permanent lunar base and sustain a human presence beyond Earth orbit.

The Ares V is a two-stage rocket, that uses both solid and liquid propulsion. It can carry approximately 290,000 pounds (132,000 kilograms) to low Earth orbit and 144,000 pounds (65,000 kilograms) to lunar orbit.
