Variegated Spider Monkey (Colombia, Venezuela)

Hunting, habitat loss, and the exotic-pet trade have critically endangered the variegated spider monkey, also known as the brown spider monkey, a new report says.

This large animal reproduces slowly, bearing only single offspring at three- or four-year intervals, further complicating its chances of survival.

The species was named one of the 25 most endangered primates in the October 27, 2007, report by the Primate Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union's Species Survival Commission (SSC) and the International Primatological Society, in collaboration with Conservation International.
