TOP FIVE ISLAND DESTINATIONS

Chiloi, Chile

The Chiloi archipelago's pristine seascape (pictured in this 1998 photo) is one reason the islands tied for third place in a new ranking of the world's best kept island destinationsand quite a few that are succumbing to tourism overkill.

The rankings were just published in the November/December 2007 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine.

Southern Chile's Chiloi also scored high because it is "enhanced by protected forests and dozens of historic towns and wooden churches," said and expert quoted by traveler.

(Both National Geographic News and Traveler magazine are part of the National Geographic Society.)
