Yangon, Myanmar (Burma), September 24, 2007—Hundreds of Buddhist monks march through the streets of Myanmar's largest city to protest against the ruling military government.

Nearly a hundred thousand anti-government protestors joined in the country's biggest rally since 1988, when a pro-democracy campaign was crushed by the military.

The protests began as scattered opposition to rising fuel prices, but the monks' involvement energized the demonstrations into a major, countrywide movement. (See a map of Myanmar.)

As of Friday, 13 people—including 3 monks—had been killed as security forces attempted to crack down on the uprising.
