Berlin, Germany, August 20, 2007—A reporter flies alongside German police during a test flight of the MT-03 gyrocopter, a helicopterlike craft, near the Schoenhagen airfield just south of Berlin.

Gyrocopters don't use an engine to power their rotors. Instead they rely on aerodynamic lift from the spinning blades to stay in the air.

German police plan to use the lighter, less expensive craft in place of helicopters for airborne searches and traffic control.
