Xintai, China, August 20, 2007—Workers fill sandbags outside a flooded coal mine in China's east Shandong Province.
The sandbags will prevent water from entering the mine, where 181 miners have been trapped since Friday. The men were caught when severe rains burst a river dyke, sending water surging into the mine shafts.
Though rescue workers are frantically pumping water from the shafts, experts have little hope that the miners will survive.
Several days of floods following a typhoon have killed at least seven and displaced more than 757,000 people in southern China.
