London, United Kingdom, August 11, 2007—Workers suspended by ropes carry out cleaning and maintenance work on the clock face of London's landmark Big Ben.

The clock's hourly and quarterly chimes were silenced at 8 a.m. British time on August 11.

The 'bongs" of Big Ben will not be heard for the next six weeks. The cleaning is the final phase of a maintenance program prior to the 150th anniversary of the clock in 2009.
