August 9, 2007— Endeavour mission specialist Barbara Morgan, left, waves to mission controllers with shuttle Commander Scott Kelly on the aft flight deck of the orbiter.

The mission, transporting parts of the International Space Station and carrying educator astronaut Barbara Morgan, is the first flight for Endeavour since December 2002.

Morgan, a former elementary schoolteacher from Idaho, was the backup for astronaut Christa McAuliffe in the inaugural teacher-in-space flight aboard Challenger in 1986.

McAuliffe and her six crewmates died when Challenger blew up a minute after liftoff.
