Sochi, Russia, July 5, 2007—Bring on the vodka.

Thousands of spectators cheered and clapped Thursday upon hearing the announcement that the Russian resort town of Sochi will host the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Often called the "Russian Riviera," Sochi's sits between the picturesque Black Sea and the snow-topped Caucasus mountains. See a Russia map.

The event will be the first time Russia has sponsored a winter games.

"I am overjoyed," said Dmitry Chernyskenklo, the chief executive officer of the Sochi 2014 bid, told www.sochi2014.com.

"This is one of the most important days in Russia's history."
