Bangladesh, one of world's most densely populated countries, is no stranger to natural disasters. Much of it lies on low-lying plains, making it vulnerable to flooding from summer monsoons and cyclones. In 1998 Bangladesh was the victim of an unprecedented tragedya confluence of melt water, heavy precipitation, and deforestation that left the country two-thirds underwater and tens of millions of people homeless.
