Pedro's grandmother (see previous photo), Cecilia Villegas, is concerned about the drop in water levels in the Monte Desert of Argentina. Villegas, like many indigenous Huarpes depend on the groundwater for their livelihoods.

Villegas said she would have to move if the water table sank farther—a decision many locals have already made. Many have migrated to Argentina's cities, where they often struggle with cultural assimilation and bleak job prospects.

There are about 2,000 Teltecs still living in the desert.
