Los Angeles, California, May 8, 2007A wildfire roars close to Griffith Observatory, a historic landmark in Los Angeles's Griffith Park.
The worst wildfire in half a century has charred 800 acres (323 hectares) of the park, a famed oasis and home to the Hollywood sign. The blaze forced more than a hundred homes to be evacuated and closed the Observatory and nearby Los Angeles Zoo.
High winds that initially spurred the blaze have died down, and the area was 75 percent contained by Thursday morning.
There were no casualties reported, though scientists are concerned the abundant wildlife in the areasuch as coyotes and bobcatsmay have been affected.
