Bukit Tinggi, Indonesia, March 8, 2007—A woman and a boy ride past a crumpled mosque on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where a magnitude 6.3 earthquake sent buildings toppling and killed at least 70 people.

Because if its location on the temblor- and volcano-prone "Ring of Fire" encircling the Pacific Ocean, the archipelago nation is no stranger to natural disasters, having borne the brunt of the devastating December 26, 2004, tsunami—caused by a massive undersea quake—that left 230,000 dead worldwide.
