Ahangama, Sri Lanka, January 30, 2007—Traditional stilt fishermen wait for a nibble on their lines in Ahangama, a town about 87 miles (140 kilometers) south of the Sri Lankan metropolis of Colombo. The fishermen often sell their catches for pennies apiece, so many have taken simply to posing for tourists instead.

Life for the fishermen may continue to remain unstable. Hopes are dwindling for a peaceful end to ethnic violence between the official government and a group known as the Tamil Tigers, who are fighting for an independent state. The government recently vowed to crush "terrorism" and has launched offensives into Tiger-held territory, prompting a series of retaliatory attacks.
