A southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) born in Hungary's Budapest Zoo this week first rhino conceived by artificial insemination. Natural breeding could not occur at the zoo, because the zoo's existing rhinos were brother and sister.
After years of conservation efforts, the southern white rhinoceros is currently the most populous of rhino subspecies. However, its numbers are still slim and most live in zoos or protected areas.
