Israel

A 12-year-old female chimpanzee from an Israeli safari park underwent an ultrasound on January 3, 2007, in preparation for a medical procedure that placed a temporary birth control device in the animal's womb.

The chimp, named Liki, is a resident of the Ramat Gan Safari, an animal park and zoo outside Tel Aviv. Although chimps are at risk of extinction in the wild, the group in the Israeli park is thriving, and officials hope the birth control procedure will help control the great apes' captive population.
