Crew chief Tom Castillo of the Colorado National Guard drops hay from a helicopter as part of an effort to feed stranded cattle near Lamar, Colorado.

The state's National Guard deployed eight helicopters and a cargo plane on January 3, 2007, to drop hundreds of bales of hay over the region. A blizzard the week before had dumped more than three feet (about a meter) of snow across eastern Colorado, covering pastures and keeping ranchers from reaching their livestock herds.
