Vancouver, Washington

Water vapor being expelled from Mount St. Helens mixed with a cold front moving through the Pacific Northwest to create a towering plume of steam over the active volcano on December 19. Mount St. Helens, which erupted cataclysmically in 1980, has been experiencing regular low-key eruptions since September 2004.

This photo was taken from atop the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) from the mountain.
