Shanxi Province, China

All 34 coal miners caught underground in northern China's Nanshan Colliery in Shanxi Province were confirmed dead on Wednesday—the same day these workers were photographed collecting bodies. The miners were trapped on November 12 after over four tons of illegally stored explosives caught fire.

Another 47 miners were confirmed dead on Thursday in a similar accident at the Jiaojiazhai mine, also in Shanxi, bringing the total death count to 81 between the two accidents.

China's coal mines are considered the world's deadliest, with more than 3,000 deaths reported this year alone, according to news reports. China uses coal for about 70 percent of its energy requirements.
