Sea Bass Fishers Weather the Storm

Smashing through heavy seas off the Falkland Islands (South America map), the U.K.-flagged long-liner Gambler travels from one Chilean sea bass line to another. Long-liners stream miles-long, baited fishing lines from their back decks.

The Gambler's crew won't stop for anything slower than hurricane-force winds, says photographer Paul A. Sutherland. And given the sperm whales, sea lions, and killer whales constantly poaching its lines, the crew is forever watching out for its livelihood, as well as life and limb.
