2 (tie). The Alhambra and Medieval Granada, Spain

Spanish history is written in centuries-old brick at the circa-1300 fortress looming over the gateway city of Granada (Spain map).

Built by the last Muslim dynasty to rule the country, the Alhambra (top left) was in the 1500s revised in a Renaissance style by King Charles I. Today the palace's timeless charms are well tended, Traveler magazine says, thanks to "much improved" handling of tourist traffic.
