Forest fires on the edge of Montana's Glacier National Park have left a somber atmosphere along the banks of the North Fork of the Flathead River.

Originating in British Columbia, the Flathead flows 245 miles (394 kilometers) across the Rocky Mountains and the U.S.-Canada border to Montana's Flathead Lake (wallpaper: Indian canoe on Flathead Lake). The North Fork is a vital waterway for migrating trout, fish that are greatly revered by anglers in the region.
