The Housatonic (HOO-zuh-TAW-nik) River flows from western Massachusetts through Connecticut into Long Island Sound. A number of factory towns on the upper parts of the river were once responsible for polluting the water to such an extent that its fish can still be unsafe to eat. Today the river is making progress toward a clean recovery with the help of community groups such as the Housatonic Valley Association.
