This image was captured during a photography workshop at the Banff Centre, Stegman recalled in a statement.

We were spending the day shooting kayakers running rapids outside Banff. I realized that everyone could get good action photos, and decided that I wanted something a little ... more creative.

While working with the natural surroundings for different compositions, I zoomed in on one of the kayakers and slowed down my shutter speed to give the photograph a more artistic feel, while still trying to capture the action of the event.
