July 13, 2006WWith their fields of green and grapes,
wineries might not seem environmentally unfriendly. But central
California's rapidly expanding vineyards are coming under fire their
use of pesticides and waterand for occupying valuable real
estate during a housing boom.
Now area winemakers are aiming
to adopt sustainable land-use practices before local governments
impose even more costly regulations. If a new study that says global warming may crush the West Coast wine industry
is accurate, their eco-efforts may be all for naught.
For now,
though, see how the Golden State's wineries are thriving, as
appealing to the eye as to the palate.
