Sean Davis, 33 (left), and Samuel Mation, 74, stand in front of their hurricane-damaged homes in the village of Eight Mile Rock on the island of Grand Bahama.

Debris in the foreground marks where another home once stood. Davis says he watched as a 12-foot (3.7-meter) storm surge lifted his neighbor's house off its foundation and sent it crashing into his own home (background left).

"This was a massive wave that came in, one that was beyond any way to control it," Davis said. "You couldn't do nothing with that one."
